Family, friends await news about soldier
Army is tight-lipped about Bowe Bergdahl’s status
By TONY EVANS

A call to U.S. Army Central Command in Tampa, Fla., last week yielded no news on the status of Pfc. Bowe Bergdahl, a Hailey resident apparently captured by Taliban militants on July 2.
Nonetheless, people across the country continue to pray for Bergdahl and make inquiries about whether the military has made any progress in locating him. Lacking news from national media outlets, people from places such as Oklahoma, Texas and Vermont have called the Express in search of information about Bergdahl.
The circumstances that led to Bergdahl's capture remain uncertain.
Bergdahl was raised in Blaine County, near Hailey. He is a member of the 1st Battalion, 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, based at Fort Richardson, Alaska.
He entered the Army in June 2008 and went through basic training in Fort Benning, Ga.
Bergdahl is currently the only U.S. soldier held captive in Afghanistan.
Bergdahl's official military status changed from "whereabouts unknown" to "missing/captured" on July 15 after a 28-minute online video showed him sitting cross-legged in front of a low table and a white sheet while being interviewed by his captors.
Though family, friends and the Pentagon deliberately kept Bergdahl's identity secret for nearly three weeks after the BBC reported a U.S. soldier missing July 2, the government was forced to reveal his name when the video appeared. Bergdahl's identification tags were displayed in the video, which officials believe was made about July 14.
U.S. Navy Capt. Jack Hanzlik, public affairs officer for U.S. Central Command, responded to a call from the Idaho Mountain Express last week, saying there was no news on Bergdahl's status. Hanzlik reported to Lt. Col. Tim Marsano, public affairs officer for the Idaho National Guard, who forwarded the information to the Mountain Express.
Has anyone read or seen anything else about this missing American POW? Seems to be a news blackout.......
The insurgent leader, Mullah Sangeen, has reportedly demanded the U.S. halt air raids as a condition for the return of the soldier.

Kidnapped soldier Bowe Bergdahl's family is 'overwhelmed' by messages of support

A woman who declined to be identified ties a yellow ribbon around a tree in downtown Hailey, Idaho, in honor of Pfc. Bowe Bergdahl (below).
The family of Pfc. Bowe Bergdahl said Monday they are "overwhelmed" by messages of support from around the world asking for the safe return of their son.
In their second public statement since Bergdahl appeared on a video released by the Taliban, the Idaho soldier's family said they are not giving up hope.
"We'd like to remind all of you that our sole focus is seeing our beloved son, Bowe, safely home," said the statement released by the Blaine County sheriff's office.
"We have been overwhelmed with the outpouring of support and concern toward Bowe and our family. As you know, this situation is extremely difficult for everyone involved," the statement said. "Please continue to keep Bowe in your thoughts and prayers and we'd ask for your continued respect of our need for privacy in this difficult time."
The family has declined to give interviews to the media, but residents of Hailey, Idaho, where Bergdahl grew up, tied hundreds of yellow ribbons along Main Street.
"We're going to run out of ribbons pretty quick," said Jim Spinelli, director of the Hailey Chamber of Commerce.
Bergdahl, 23, was captured by low-level militants near a remote U.S. outpost in southeastern Afghanistan on June 30. He was reportedly sold to the Haqqani network, a Taliban group with strong ties to Al Qaeda that operates freely along the Afghan-Pakistan border.
Fears have been raised that Bergdahl has been taken to Pakistan,
making any rescue operation extremely difficult, since U.S. troops are
not allowed to operate there.
A Taliban commander said he was taken to Khandahar province, a Taliban stronghold, but that claim could not be verified.
Secretary of State Clinton said the United States was doing everything it can to find Bergdahl.
"I mean, it's just outrageous," she said. "It's a real sign of desperation and inappropriate criminal behavior on the parts of these terrorist groups, so we are going to do everything we can to get him."
Bergdahl's friends and family have known for weeks about his capture, but kept quiet in order to protect him.
Hailey is a sleepy, resort community known for its privacy, which has drawn many A-list celebrities there.
The town has remained quiet since Saturday, when Bergdahl appeared on a video released by the Taliban wearing local garb and being prompted to speak.
"Please, please bring us home so that we can be back where we belong and not over here wasting out time and our lives," a clearly shaken Bergdahl said.
Bergdahl appeared to be in good condition in the video, purportedly shot July 14.
A Taliban spokesman said Bergdahl is "in good shape and good health." He said the group has not decided Bergdahl's fate.
Hours after the video was released, a Facebook page called "Bring Bowe Bergdahl Home" was created. Hundreds of people from across the globe have written messages of support.
A family friend urged Bergdahl to "stand tall, stand firm."
In an interview with local KTVB-TV, Tim Baker told his friend not to give up.
"Bowe, if you see this, know what we love you and we are praying fervently for you and prayers are going up for you from all over the world," Baker said.
Bergdahl, who was home-schooled and an avid ballet dancer, joined the Army last year and is on his first deployment to a combat zone.
He arrived in Afghanistan in March with the 1st Battalion, 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division from Fort Richardson, Alaska.
